Finally, LeBron has lost an NBA All-Star Game!

Since 2018, when the NBA began using the top vote-getters from each conference to serve as captains and select teams playground style, LeBron James’ teams have won five games in a row.

On Sunday, Team Giannis edged Team LeBron 184-175 to come away with a thrilling victory in Salt Lake City.

Team Giannis is now 2-0 against Team LeBron. “I’m just thrilled that we were able to secure a victory and I got one against LeBron,” Antetokounmpo said afterward.

Team Giannis had a comfortable 158-141 lead at the end of three quarters and the target score is “the leading team’s total score after three quarters plus 24 points,” as per NBA rules. Damian Lillard of Portland then sealed the victory with a 3-pointer to round out the scoring.

Team Giannis made 29 3-pointers, led by Boston’s Jayson Tatum with 10, Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell with eight and Lillard with eight each.

Who Won the Kobe Bryant NBA All-Star Game MVP Award?

Tatum earned himself the award, scoring an All-Star record 55 points – including 27 in the third quarter alone! On 22-for-31 shooting from the field and 10-for-18 on 3-pointers, Tatum added 10 rebounds, 6 assists, one block and one steal to go along with his All-Star record performance.

Tatum, an avid Kobe Bryant fan, won his first award.

“This is an incredibly special occasion for me,” Tatum said. “My first All-Star Game was in Chicago in 2020 when they renamed the MVP after me. That day, I told myself that I had to get one of those rings before my career is complete.”

“To wear my signature shoe and break the record of someone I idolized is truly a remarkable day.”

Kobe Bryant’s Kobe Bryant All-Star MVP Award trophy pays homage to Bryant’s jersey numbers, MVPs, All-Star MVPs, championships and Finals MVPs.

Why Did LeBron James Skip the Second Half?

James, who only played one of Los Angeles Lakers’ four games before the All-Star break due to a sore left ankle, did not return for the second half due to a bruised right hand. Nonetheless, he finished with 13 points and four assists to extend his All-Star career points record to 426.

James said, “I attempted to get one little chase-down block and my finger got caught in the rim.” Fortunately, he continued, “it won’t be anything serious – just take a rest for precautionary purposes.”

Why did Giannis Antetokounmpo play only 20 seconds?

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a sprained right wrist during Thursday’s victory against Chicago. Though he claimed to be fine, he did not participate in the Skills Challenge on Saturday and after starting the All-Star Game and dunking 15 seconds into it, he immediately fouled Luka Doncic and left with 11:40 remaining in the first quarter; unfortunately, he did not return.

Other notable NBA All-Star performances

Mitchell scored 40 points and had 10 assists for Team Giannis, while Lillard added 26 points to Team LeBron. Boston’s Jaylen Brown led Team LeBron with 35 points and 14 rebounds, while Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Dallas’ Kyrie Irving each contributed 32 points, along with 15 assists each.

Which charitable organizations were the beneficiaries of the All-Star Game?

Team LeBron chose Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah as his local charity, while Team Giannis chose Raise the Future. Each team began the game with a $150,000 donation to their chosen cause; if each quarter ended in a tie, each charity received an additional $50,000 donation.

Raise the Future will receive $550,000 and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah will receive $200,000.

Next year’s NBA All-Star Game will take place in Indianapolis on Feb. 18 and is hosted by the Indiana Pacers. The last time it was held here was 1985 at Hoosier Dome when West won with Ralph Sampson earning MVP with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
